# Activated Carbon Price 2026: Why Per-Ton Price Misleads > Source: https://www.yelicarbon.com/blog-carbon-price-2026.html A $900/ton quote and a $1,200/ton quote can end up costing the same delivered — or the cheap one can cost far more. Here is how to compare correctly. [Comparing per-ton price and landed cost of activated carbon] **By the YELI Technical Team** · Updated August 2026 · 8 min read Every week we get the same email: "What is your price per ton?" It is the right question — and the most misleading one in this industry. Activated carbon is sold by weight, but it performs by adsorption. Two tons of "activated carbon" can be different products. This guide walks through what actually moves the price in 2026 and how to compare quotes that look nothing alike. ## First: Which Carbon Are You Actually Buying? Raw material is the biggest single price driver. Coconut-shell carbon costs more than coal-based because the feedstock, activation yield and pore structure differ. That premium is worth paying when you need hardness and microporosity — gold recovery, potable water, high-purity applications. Coal-based carbon is the value choice for bulk air and wastewater duty where specs allow. Comparing a coconut price to a coal price per ton is comparing apples to oranges; always confirm the base material before you compare. ## The Specs Hidden Inside the Price Within the same base material, four numbers drive cost: iodine value (surface activity), hardness (how long it survives handling and regeneration), mesh size (8x30 costs differently from 12x40 because of yield), and moisture (you pay freight on water). A high-iodine, high-hardness coconut GAC for gold duty simply costs more to make than a general-purpose grade. When a quote looks suspiciously cheap, check which of these specs were quoted — cheap often means lower iodine or softer carbon, and the real cost shows up later in dosage rates and attrition losses. ## Moisture: The Quiet Markup Activated carbon is sold per metric ton, and that ton includes water. Carbon at 8% moisture versus 3% moisture means you are paying freight and customs duty on up to 50 kg of water per ton. More importantly, moisture is rarely specified in RFQs, so it is where margins hide. Ask for moisture on the COA and compare on a dry basis. This single question has exposed more inflated quotes than any other. ## Packaging and Freight Change the Picture FOB factory, FOB port, CIF, DDP — the delivered price can be 30-50% above the factory price once freight, insurance and destination charges are added, depending on route and volume. Packaging matters too: jumbo bags move cheaper per ton than palletized 25 kg bags. When comparing quotes, build a simple landed-cost table: unit price, moisture adjustment, packing, freight, duty, and delivery to your door. The cheapest FOB price is frequently not the cheapest delivered price. > Price per ton is a starting point, not a comparison. Landed cost per unit of adsorption is the only honest number. ## What Is Normal in 2026? We avoid publishing a single "market price" because quotes move with raw coconut-shell availability, energy costs and freight rates, and because grade-to-grade spread is wide. The useful way to benchmark: ask the same spec, same packing, same destination from three suppliers, and compare the COA numbers, not just the price. If a quote is 20% below the others, the difference is usually in the spec sheet, the moisture allowance or the currency/incoterm — find it before you order, not after. ## Questions to Ask Any Supplier To make quotes comparable, send the same six lines to everyone: base material, iodine value, hardness, mesh, moisture cap, and incoterm/destination. Then add: "COA per batch, independent testing option, and loading photos." Suppliers who answer cleanly are usually the ones who ship what they quote. Suppliers who dodge on moisture or COA are telling you where the margin is — and it is not in your favor. ### Transparent Coconut GAC Pricing, Specs First Tell us your application and destination, and we reply with a spec-matched FOB or CIF quote — moisture, mesh, packing and COA all itemized. Compare on base material, specs, moisture and delivered cost, and the picture becomes clear. Need the full list of what to check?
